Joe
Doidge
Joe Doidge was 26 years old when I knew him in
1933. He lived with his parents William and Lottie Doidge on their original 1905
homestead on SW.24.31.19 about 5 miles NW of our farm on 10. Joe had three
brothers, Art, Ernie, Alfred and four sisters, Clara, Gladys, Irene and Isabel.
Joe was born in Moosomin but came with his parents to farm at Copeland. For
extra income William worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway constructing the
railway grade between Wynyard and Lanigan in 1909. Lottie worked with Charles Harvey to
help draft the plans for the Foote School district.
On February 21st., I mention Joe Doidge and Ronald Blyth going to the bush camp for
firewood after a winter snowstorm. Ronald was only two years younger than Joe,
so they were very close friends.
In the late 30's, the Doidge farm holdings were one of the largest in the area.
Although the land was poor for grain, they had many cattle, and raised purebred
stallions and brood mares. About 100 horses were worked on the farm.
Joe married Alice Blanche Davidson on November 19th, 1942 and farmed near
Raymore. They raised three children, Irene, Rita and Ken. Joe was active in
community affairs and was a trustee for the Saline Creek school district from
1947 to 1974.
