The Evans Brothers

The three Evans brothers were early settlers in the Copeland area, arriving about the same time as Roy Copeland and William Foote.  The brothers names were Harold, Leonard and William and they all applied for homesteads on section 32.30.18, just below the correction line.  They were three miles due South of my dad's original homestead on NW.16.  Harold was on the SE quarter, Len on the NE and Bill on the NW.  Their closest neighbor was Stan Webster on SW.32.  Len was known far and wide for his hard working oxen teams, Tom & Jerry and Joe & Jeff, who worked hard on all their farms.  The three brothers received their patent deeds for their quarters one year apart, starting with Harold on October 20, 1908.

In 1907 the first Copeland Post Office opened at Harold Evan's place on SE.32.  Earlier that year he married Iris McGaw at the Kutawa Church.  Both Harold and Leonard served as postmasters, and they held the following terms:
Harold: December 1st., 1907 to July 15th.,1908
Leonard: February 1st., 1908 to April 9th., 1910
After Leonard resigned, A. H. Foster took over the job for 6 months before I. Shipman, who then served for 5 years.  The Copeland post office was closed for good on April 15th., 1947.

The Evans brothers had a sister named Ellen (Nell), who married close neighbor Stan Smith who was homesteading two miles West on SW.6.31.18.  Harold's sister-in-law Phyllis McGaw lived with him and Iris in 1911.  William Evans died serving his country in world war one, and his name is inscribed on the Dafoe Cenotaph.

The newly formed Copeland School board wrote their first check to Len Evans in 1908 to purchase an acre of land on the northeast corner of section 32.  The Copeland school was built that year and students were educated there for 58 years before it was closed.
