Albert Wellington Hatton

My Uncle Albert, affectionately know as Bert, was born in 1884 at Peterborough Ontario.  As my dad's younger brother, he was the last to leave Ontario to reside in Saskatchewan.  Unfortunately, by the time he arrived at Copeland all the ten dollar homesteads were taken.  After serving in the First World War, Bert moved to North Battleford and married Marjory Wilson in 1928.  Their son Ralph was born there in 1930.  The family then moved to Vancouver BC, and were living there when my dad David died in 1934.  Bert, Marjory and Ralph sent a wedding gift and card to Lila and I when we were wed in 1940.

Before signing up for WW-2, Bert had worked many years as an engineer for the C.P.R.  In the summer of 1943 he died tragically at North Vancouver in a freak railway work accident when some timbers fell on him.  He was 59. My cousin Ralph grew up on the lower mainland and later married Anne.  When my son David was born in 1947, Ralph and Anne sent him a baby shower gift. Ralph and Ann later moved to California.  I never mentioned Bert in my 1933 diaries.

In the 1901 census record, Albert was 17 years old and living in Lakefield Village (Ontario) with his grandparents William (78) and Ann (70) Mathews.  His mother, Jane Hatton (my grandmother) died on May 20th. 1886 giving birth to Roland Hatton, so Albert was raised by his grandparents.  During the 1906 census, Bert (now 22) was boarding with 12 other people at Edna Chambers boarding house at Winnipeg.  Edna was 26 and had three young children.  He was on his way out to Saskatchewan to be near his three brothers.

On February 23rd, 1916 Albert signed up for the Canadian over-seas expeditionary force of WW-1.  His military attestation paper shows he was living at 501-2nd. Street West in Calgary Alberta, and a steam engineer by trade.  His next of kin is recorded as Alfred Tupper of 10th. Ave. West, Vancouver, British Columbia.  I have no idea who Alfred Tupper was.  Albert was 32 and unmarried.
