Hatton Homestead Patents

Uncle William was the first to receive a homestead entry to his NE.10 quarter in township 31 on August 8th., 1906.  His brother James was only a month behind, receiving his entry to NW.10 beside him on September 7th.  William built a house during January of 1907 and moved in on February 1st., living there continuously until November 25th., 1908.  James was a month behind, building his house in February and moving in with his wife Edith, sons Gerald and Elmer on March 1st., 1907.  I wondered how my Uncles could have built houses in the middle of winter until I found out that the winter of 06/07 was one of the mildest on record, with very little snowfall.  My father David came to Copeland early that year helping his older brothers build their houses and work the land.  Dad moved in and batched with Uncle Will on NE.10 from February 1st. to April 15th., 1907.  His own homestead entry on NW.16 opened for him in mid April, so he built himself a basic house in May and lived there for only a month.  He then moved in with Uncle Jim on July 2nd., and lived on NW.10 until December 14th.  Uncle Will Joined them at Jim and Edith's on November 26th, so Dad moved back on his NW.16 quarter on December 15th and lived there until October 1908 in order to satisfy his homestead patent.  Will continued to live with Jim long after his homestead was granted for NE.10 on August 21st., 1909.  Surprisingly, both Jim's and Will's Dominion Land Grant patent deeds were dated the same - November 13th., 1909.  Dad came back to live with Jim & Edith from October 25th. to December 24th., 1908, but returned to NW.16 from December 25th. until June 20th., 1910, when his own patent was granted.  That summer he sold NW.16 to O.J. Brooks and purchased the north half of 10 from his two brothers Will and Jim who both wanted to move on to greener pastures.  After marring my mother Jessie on December 28th., 1910 in Ontario, my soon to be parents, returned to Copeland to take over Jim & Edith's house on NW.10.  This house became our family home for many years thereafter.  The house is no longer there, but it was situated in the tree line in the center of the above photo.
