James Leonard Hatton

My Uncle Jim was born at Lakefield Ontario on May 24th (Queen Victoria's birthday) 1876.  At the time of the 1901 census he was married to Edith A. (nee Covell) and they lived at Peterborough. Their eldest son Gerald was born in 1903 and traveled out west with them in 1906 to homestead NW.10.31.18.  Two more sons were born in Saskatchewan.  Elmer in 1907 and Lorne in 1910.

Bjorn Nordal had earlier applied for patent on NW.10.31.18, but had to cancel his quarter on August 4th., 1906 due to illness.

Two pioneer neighbors who lived a mile to the southwest witnessed Uncle James' sworn statement for his homestead on September 11, 1909. Alfred E. Shaw on SE.2.31.18 and Ogmund(er) Ogmundson on SW.2.31.18.

James & Edith proved up their patent on Northwest 10 on November 13, 1909, but they sold out to my father David the next spring.  On May 26th 1916 James enlisted in the army for WW-1 at Moose jaw.  At that time Jim was working at Alsask, Sask., where he was the Imperial Oil agent, but they lived at Marengo about 20 miles away.  They later lived at Salvador and Meadow Lake Saskatchewan before retiring to Vancouver, British Columbia.

(Gerald married Evelyn, Lorne married Mabel Wilson and their son Jack was born in 1930)
