"Amos Colborne Sparrow"
Amos and his brother Thomas Sparrow came out by
train to Lipton with the Evans and Fish families in 1905 to homestead the South
half of section 4.31.18. Amos proved up the South East side but later sold to Bill Morrow in order to buy
section 29 in 1916 and marry Eva Armstrong. Tom settled on the South West quarter, on which corner
the Copeland Cemetery was later located.
My friend Jean Sparrow was 15 years old in 1933. She
lived with her mother Eva and her younger brother Billy on the North half of
section 29.31.18, four miles south of Dafoe. Jean's father Amos had died
previously in 1931. William (Bill) Ernest Mason was hired by Eva to run
the farm until 1947 when her son Bill took it over when he turned 21. Jean
married Lorne (Bud) Pollen, son of Louis Pollen in 1942 and took over
NE.29.31.18 to farm next to her brother Bill. Bill Mason later moved to
Raymore and married Dorothy Felton from Semans.
I first mention Jean on Monday, January 2nd. when Clarence and I picked her up
with Francis Bolt, Mary Doidge and Joker Smith to watch us play hockey. On January 22nd., my mother and
father invited Eva Sparrow, Jean and Billy along with Bill Mason and the Fennemores'
for Sunday dinner. My father David and John Blakely took Eva home February 9th.
in a severe winter snow storm.
Eva along with our family, was active in
the Foote-Copeland United Church which helped keep us close friends. On
March 28th. the nurse from Abernethy stopped off at Sparrows on her way to Doughtertys' to care for 9 month old baby Irene.
Jean and I sang together in the Dafoe choir along with George Fennemore, Doris Crane
and others. In the 30's Jean recited monologues for the Fennemore band.
In 1940, the Sparrows' gave Lila and I a wedding gift and card at our reception
at the Copeland community hall.
